Thirty Seconds to Mars is a rock n' roll trio from Los Angeles, California.
Formed in 1998 the band consists of Jared Leto the lead vocalist, guitarist, bassist, and keyboard player, Jared's brother; Shannon on drums and percussion, and Tomo Miličević, lead guitar, bass, violin, keyboards and effects.
The band's eponymous debut album, was released in 2002 to positive reviews but with limited commercial success.
The band achieved worldwide fame three years later with the release of their second album; "A Beautiful Lie" (2005), which received multiple RIAA certifications all over the world, including platinum in the United States.
Since then Jared has won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his acting prowess.
Leto is considered to be a method actor, known for his in-depth research of his roles. He often remains completely in character for the duration of the shooting schedule of his films.
He has immersed himself into character even to the point of adversely affecting his health. Thus he is known to be selective about taking a film role.
Leto's intense desire to be creative and to be accepted publicly for creativity comes from his upbringing.
His family moved frequently from his native Louisiana to different cities around the country when he was a youth because his mother's father was in the Air Force.
Leto explains, " moving around a lot was a normal way of life."
His mother Constance then joined the hippie movement and encouraged her sons to get involved in the arts.
Leto has once stated, "I was raised around a lot of artists, musicians, photographers, painters and people that were in theater so it was kind of looked upon by my mother as the greatest contribution people make to society; to create and inspire, and open other's minds to new thoughts and feelings."
30 Seconds to Mars to date has sold over 15 million albums worldwide. They have been compared to Pink Floyd, Tool, and U2, for their philosophical and spiritual lyrics, and concept albums, and their use of experimental sounds and effects.
Thirty Seconds to Mars began their "Into the Wild Tour" in February 2010 and was among the hardest-working touring artists of the year. In December 2011, after 22 months on the road, Thirty Seconds to Mars was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for the most live shows during a single album cycle, with 300 shows on one tour for one album release.
